Course Update – 20 September 2024

Greens Renovations

The 2024 Greens Renovation Program has been successfully completed, albeit very challenging for the Course Team in the poor and windy climatic conditions. The short game area greens were completed last week after a week-long delay from poor weather. A good recovery response is occurring and mowing maintenance reintroduced. The mowing heights will gradually be lowered until we reach our spring-summer levels over the coming weeks. Full recovery is expected in the coming 2-3 weeks as originally anticipated.

Wind Damage to Courses (Bunkers and Trees)

Our immediate maintenance plans for all bunkers post the recent wind events is to reposition the sand within each bunker to its original position, recompact the faces, then review the level of sand loss and rectify that with the appropriate sand type. Any further requirements outside of those immediate plans will be reviewed and an action plan designed and implemented. The restoration work will remain ongoing until it is fully complete, and is expected to take several weeks/months. A local rule wall remain in place for these areas whilst the repairs are being made.

Repair works have begun on the south course bunkers with good progress being made. The wasteland repairs have begun on 3N as this was identified as the highest priority with very heavy sand loss and rectification requirements to re-establish the entry areas.

Tree Loss and Clean Up

The tree clean up work has progressed well and is nearing completion. 10 trees were lost during the wind storm period and these will be replaced in the appropriate areas as part of our annual planting program.

Vegetation

Our heathland plant communities are coming into their full flower bloom phase displaying a striking array of colours that complement the courses. See examples of specific flowering plant species images below.

We look forward to members joining us on the Spring Course Walk in October to see and learn more about our significant site plants.

Maintenance Facility Tour

On Tuesday 17 September, Ben Payne (Course Manager) and myself hosted the 2nd addition of our maintenance facility tour. We were joined by 21 members that were shown a behind the scenes look into the maintenance facility operation along with various course maintenance systems.

There are more dates available soon and we encourage any members to attend. See the ‘Latest News’ area for dates and booking links.

PK Course Employee Harrison Battersby at The BMW Championship

We would like to wish Harrison Battersby and the grounds crew at Wentworth Golf Club well for this weekend. Harrison is currently working at Wentworth Golf Club in London and they are currently hosting the premier event on the DP World Tour – The BMW Championship. Harrison has been employed by Wentworth for 3.5 months to broaden his skill set and gain experience at a premier world club. Harrison will return to PK on 7 October and in a new role as Course Foreman.
